Competition 2014 “Innovative Country”
In 2014, the competition “Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” was devoted to the countryside. The 100 best ideas for improving rural regions are sought under the slogan “Innovative Country – Rethinking Rural Spaces”. The competition honours projects in Germany that make rural communities fit for the future, from promising business ideas and new mobility offers to tourist attractions.
Germany is a multifaceted country. Various regional characteristics of centuries-old villages and communities help give the Federal Republic its own unique identity. They arouse a longing in many urbanites for a life in the country and are home to more than half of Germany’s population.
Yet rural regions in Germany are much more than idyllic retreats and places with a high quality of life. Residents are driving the energy turnaround in Germany, doing research on modern biotechnologies and producing high-quality food. Small and medium-sized companies are based here, where they are the market leaders despite being outside of big cities.
Many rural communities in Germany are facing big challenges, though. How can they remain attractive to their residents? How can the communities adapt to the consequences of demographic changes in society? How can they harness art and culture to spark the enthusiasm of visitors and tourists for their region?
The competition “Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” 2014 is rewarding ideas and innovations that can improve the future prospects of rural regions in Germany. The focus is not on actual villages or towns, but on good ideas from across Germany that show what rural life can be like tomorrow: projects from business, culture, science, environment, education or society that serve as shining examples in Germany and abroad. A high-profile jury will choose the best 100 ideas that make a lasting contribution to the future of rural spaces and regions in Germany and across the world.
